We covered an introduction to wireless site survey early last year with “From Site Survey to Flawless Wireless Connectivity”, but in this post we will further examine site surveying and how to use this new feature in more detail.

The end goal of any site survey is to ensure the most optimal configuration of the wireless network for the given requirements. These requirements can differ from physical location to physical location and can even vary within different areas of a location. Site Survey – a Designer’s Best Friend
Due to the nature of radio waves, it can often be hard to visualise how aspects of your design will work when viewed as a collection of numbers and PDF specifications. The physical environment also has a major impact on how you design the deployment and how the APs will work. These applications and others like them, allow you to visualize your WLAN deployment before, during, and after its deployment. Invisible radio waves become easy to understand with colorful heatmaps. Site surveys can be divided into three types that are typically carried out in order; predictive, pre, and post site surveys.
Predictive surveys use floor plans, estimates of building materials, and advanced algorithms to predict how the wireless network will look. This is based on the number of APs, their location, and their configuration.
Pre-site surveys allow the wireless designer to accurately record the reality of the physical environment where the WLAN will be deployed. This can then be used to prove, or disprove the validity of the design that is often created by a predictive site survey. The pre-site survey is typically carried out by placing an access point of the model you wish to use, with the configuration you think is appropriate, in different locations in the building. At each location the wireless is surveyed by taking readings using the site survey software. This then uses the information to update its model of the design.
Finally a post-site survey repeats the measurements taken by the pre-site survey but this time with all the APs for the final deployment in place. This survey is used to prove the design is correct or help identify adjustments that need to be made.
Although it is not essential to carry out all types of site surveys, it is generally recommended that at a minimum, a pre-site survey is carried out for any location with more than a handful of APs.

To perform a site survey with an AP, desired settings are typically configured before, then moving it between the locations that are being surveyed. The AP is often attached to a tripod or other type of stand to simulate the physical position it would have when deployed e.g. wall mounted or ceiling mounted. The new site survey mode allows network admins to turn an AP into a dedicated device for site surveys. When enabled the AP will broadcast an open SSID named “site_survey-” followed by its MAC address. The AP can then have the channels and transmit power set for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios.

Systems Manager can be used to deploy apps to all of your managed devices through the Systems Manager > Manage > Apps page. The Meraki Dashboard integrates directly with Google Play and both the iOS and macOS App Stores, which allows you to quickly and easily configure and deploy apps to your mobile devices.

Initial Setup
To deploy Android apps, you will first need an Android Enterprise domain, either Google or Meraki-managed, bound to your Meraki Dashboard.
To deploy iOS or macOS apps, you will first need your APNs token set up to enable communications with Apple's servers. To push out apps silently to devices, and avoid prompting the end user to sign into an Apple ID or to push apps to macOS at all, you will need to set up your Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP) account as well, which allows you to centrally manage application licenses. Adding Store Apps
Once you are ready to add your apps, navigate to Systems Manager > Manage > Apps and select 'Add new' at the top right of the page, and iOS/macOS app store, or Android Play Store app.
Search for your application, and click the app entry found to enter the app configuration page. In this example, we show adding an iOS app, but the steps are the same for macOS.
Note: Dashboard does not allow the adding of multiple apps with the same app identifier (i.e. com.carrotcreative.Ham-Horn in the above image). To check which app identifiers have already been added, navigate to the Systems Manager > Manage > Apps page, click on the wrench icon on the right, and add the 'Identifier' column.
Configuring Apps
After adding an app, you'll see an interface similar to the below. Note that Android apps may show slightly different options until changes are saved.
Scope
By default, this app will be pushed down to all devices of the matching operating system, but this can be narrowed down by tag. See tag scoping for more info.
License Method (iOS only)
This is used to specify if an iOS app should be configured to use one of your organizations VPP licenses, instead of prompting the user to sign into their Apple ID. You may use the drop down to select either VPP Codes, VPP User Assignment, or VPP Device Assignment. For more information about VPP, see our article here.
macOS App Store App deployment requires the use of VPP Device Assignment, and as such is always selected for this type of app.
Auto-Install / Auto-Uninstall

By default, apps will automatically attempt to install on all scoped devices once 'Save Changes' is clicked. To push out an install later, or leave the installation option up to the end user, who can access available apps through the managed Play Store or Systems Manager app, uncheck this option.
Remove with MDM
Selecting this check-box will force the app to be uninstalled when the Meraki management profile is uninstalled. This is important to have checked if you want to ensure that the apps you select are only available to those mobile devices that are managed by Systems Manager.
macOS App Store Apps cannot be removed by unscoping the app or this 'remove with MDM' option. To remove macOS App Store Apps the device will need to send a command to remove the app locally such as sudo rm -r '/Application/AppName' or deploy a script / custom .pkg to do this.

Attempt to Manage Unmanaged (iOS only)
If the device you push this application to is already installed, Systems Manager will attempt to take management over the app, allowing Dashboard admins to push updates and uninstalls for that app. This is only available on iOS 9+, and will prompt the user for confirmation on unsupervised devices.
